Analysis of the match between Newcastle United and Chelsea
Chelsea have shown two contrasting faces this season. They often struggle in matches against supposedly weaker opponents, yet tend to perform well when facing tougher challenges. In December alone, the Blues lost to Leeds and were held to a draw by Bournemouth, both sides considered inferior on paper.
However, Chelsea have impressed in high-profile encounters. They thrashed Barcelona 3-0 in the Champions League, held Arsenal to a 1-1 draw despite playing with ten men from late in the first half, and defeated Liverpool 2-1 on October 5, when the Reds were still far from their current crisis. In short, Chelsea may stumble in games they are expected to win, but often find solutions when confronted with difficult tests.
Newcastle represent the next tough challenge for Chelsea. While the Magpies may be inconsistent away from home, they are formidable at St James’ Park. Earlier this week, they beat Fulham in the League Cup, and more broadly, they are unbeaten in their last nine home matches, winning eight of them.
That said, Newcastle are currently facing defensive issues. A series of injuries in their back line has left them vulnerable, with the team failing to keep a clean sheet in nine consecutive matches. This could be a weakness Chelsea look to exploit, and combined with their big-game mentality, the Blues may well find a way past Newcastle.
