Analysis of the match between Bắc Ireland and Luxembourg
After losing narrowly to Slovakia in the previous round, Northern Ireland remain stuck at 6 points from 5 matches and are now 6 points behind both Germany and Slovakia, meaning they are no longer in contention for the top two positions. However, thanks to their good performance in the UEFA Nations League, Michael O'Neill’s side still secured a play-off spot, so their World Cup dream is not over yet.
Luxembourg, meanwhile, continue to show the image of a typical “minnow”. Ranked 97th in the world, they have yet to earn a single point after five matches in Group A. More broadly, they are on an 8-match winless streak across all competitions, losing 6 of those.
In the first leg, Luxembourg looked extremely poor and were beaten 1–3 by Northern Ireland. It was their fourth defeat in the last five meetings between the two sides (the other was a draw). Therefore, another victory for Northern Ireland would not be a surprise.
