Analysis of the match between Manchester City and Bayer 04 Leverkusen
Man City suffered a surprising 1–2 defeat to Newcastle in the Premier League last weekend, putting them at risk of falling further behind Arsenal in the title race. The setback has left the squad frustrated and eager to vent their anger.
In the upcoming Champions League seeding match, Leverkusen may become the target of City’s backlash. Before the loss to Newcastle, Guardiola’s side had won four straight matches, scoring at least four goals in each.
City also benefit from playing at the Etihad, where they have secured seven consecutive wins. Notably, in their most recent home match in the Champions League, they crushed Dortmund — Leverkusen’s compatriot — 4–1.
In this season’s Champions League seeding round, Man City have been excellent, remaining unbeaten with 3 wins and 1 draw after 4 matches. They sit 4th in the standings, far ahead of Leverkusen, who are down in 21st place.
Although Leverkusen have recently regained some form with three straight wins, their Champions League results remain poor: just 1 win in 4 matches, 6 goals scored, and 10 conceded.
Given their fragile performances in Europe, Leverkusen are likely to be overwhelmed by Man City at the Etihad.
